Gold filled jewelry has an outer layer of karat gold that is much thicker than the micro-layer of gold in gold plated jewelry.

Gold filled jewelry, also known as rolled gold or rolled gold plate, features a layer of alloyed gold that has been bonded to a base metal, such as brass or copper, using heat and pressure.

Gold filled jewelry has much lower gold content than karat gold, but much higher than gold plated jewelry.

The layer of gold in gold filled jewelry is often thick enough to be engraved without exposing the layer of base metal beneath it.
