A cabochon is a gem with a domed top and either a flat or slightly convex base.

Cabochons with convex bases are known as double cabochons.

Translucent to opaque gems, often highly-included, are commonly fashioned into cabochons.

Several phenomenal gems, such as opals, star sapphires, and cat's eye are cut into cabochons to enhance their phenomena.
