The asscher cut was created in 1902 by Joseph Isaac Asscher.  He received a patent for the cut, making the Asscher cut the first ever patented diamond cut.

Asscher cuts are similar to emerald cuts, but are square with larger step cuts, a higher crown and a smaller table.

The Asscher cut was popular since its creation, but reached the height of its popularity during the Art Déco Era of the 1920s-'30s.

Until World War II, the Asscher family had a patent on the cut.
